Notes: Born 1869, the daughter of a Liverpool Brewer, Edith lived with two brother in Pen-y-Bryn Hall, Llangollen for a number of years from 1901. She nursed in Malta and France where she died aged 49. She is buried in Longueness (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, and her name appears on Llangollen War Memorial.

Notes: Ryda, who was 29 when she died, served at the 3rd Western Hospital, Cardiff ‘until her health broke down’.

Clemima Coopey

Notes: Clemima Coopey became entangled in the machinery of the motor-house at the Blaenavon.Co.Ltd. She was rushing to catch the 9.30 pm train, and had illegally left her shoes there. Her husband was a soldier fighting in Salonika, and she had three young children.

Notes: aged 24/25. Buried in Mynydd Seion Chapel, Abergele. Her body was taken by train from Liverpool to Abergele, and straight to the cemetery to avoid infection.

Aldwyth Katrin Williams

Memorial: St Tudnos Churchyard, Llandudno, Caernarfonshire

Notes: Aldwyth was the only daughter of the Rector of Llanbedr-y-Cennin. She joined the VAD early in the war, and worked for three days a week in the Red Cross hospitals in Llandudno, cooking and cleaning as well as nursing. She was 26 when she died.

Hannah Davies

Notes: Hannah was the sister of two soldiers, William and John, both serving overseas. John, the younger, was killed and is buried in Jerusalem. William survived, but brought home Spanish flu. He survived that too, but Hannah caught it nursing him, and died. Letters from both brothers, in Welsh and English, survive.

Hylda Salathiel

Place of birth: Pencoed

Service: Nurse, hockey player, South Wales Nursing Association

Notes: Hylda Salathiel, who was one of seven sisters, was educated at Bridgend High School, and trained at Merthyr General Hospital. For a while she was an international hockey player, playing for Bridgend Ladies and South Wales Ladies. She nursed for a while in Bournemouth, but returned to South Wales, where she caught influenza from a patient she was nursing and died four days later. The patient recovered and sent flowers to Hylda’s funeral.
